Teaching English online and one-to-one

  • Methodology for teaching through a screen
  • Planning and running one-to-one lessons
  • Specialist Level 5 qualification
  • Five modules, 60 guided learning hours

Teaching one learner is nothing like teaching a group: the lesson is built entirely around one person's needs, teacher talking time is measured differently, and error correction has to be handled another way. The programme works on exactly those differences.

The second strand is teaching through a screen, where lesson structure, choice of materials and tools, and holding a learner's attention all require their own set of skills.

The qualification is awarded by Highfield Qualifications under Ofqual regulation and aligned with the European Qualifications Framework (EQF). It is assessed by written assignment.

For a teacher who tutors privately or wants to work with international platforms, this skill has a direct effect on income: learners are no longer tied to one city.

What this course gives you

  • Your learners are not tied to a city

Once you can teach through a screen, your learners are not limited by geography — which changes both your schedule and your income.

  • One-to-one is its own craft

A teacher used to groups often struggles with a single learner: the lesson runs short, or turns into a conversation. The programme gives you a structure for it.

  • An edge with international platforms

Remote schools single out applicants qualified in this area — to them it reads as readiness.

  • Assessed in writing

The qualification sits at Level 5 and is assessed by written assignment. It is not a course you sat through — it is a result that was checked.

Who this course is for

  • You have English at B2 or above, evidenced by a certificate
  • You want to teach English as a profession
  • You are 17 or older
  • You want a qualification that is recognised internationally

Course modules

  1. 1The principles of teaching English online

How this context differs from the traditional classroom, the kinds of positions it offers, and how demand has taken shape.

  2. 2The principles of teaching English one-to-one

Working with a single learner: how it differs from a group class and what to account for in preparation and in the lesson itself.

  3. 3Learners' needs and building a syllabus

How to establish what an individual learner needs, and how to build a syllabus from those findings — the precondition for lessons that work.

  4. 4Tools, materials and practical considerations

Which tools and materials to choose, how to adapt them to your learner, and how to settle the technical side in advance.

  5. 5Teacher talking time, error correction and planning

Managing teacher talking time (TTT) and correcting errors in this format. You finish by writing your own lesson plans and getting feedback on them.
